Equinox
Solo exhibition at KunstHalle Cloppenburg

Equinox was exhibited at KunstHalle Cloppenburg, whose open roof architecture inspired and helped to create the work. Normally light, UV light, is harmful to artworks, but this situation was turned into an advantage here.
A dark blue paper with motifs of a sun and planets hangs from the ceiling. During six exhibition weeks it will fade due to direct sunlight exposure. Only a small circular area on the bottom right is covered by a stencil. Underneath it, the paper’s original dark color is kept. The UV-bleaching process makes the cosmological elements, and any contrasts, slowly disappear over time. Yet the area protected by the stencil retains its color, and creates a small ‚moon‘.

The EQUINOX concept is based on the cosmological equinox, occurring twice a year in spring and fall. During the exhibition it happened on September 23, 2018. The fading process, beginning with the exhibition’s opening, symbolically reenacts the slow shrinkage of long summer days, the equinox itself, and the slow expanse of longer winter nights.

Equinox wurde in der KunstHalle Cloppenburg ausgestellt, deren sonnenlichtdurchlässige Dacharchitektur die Arbeit inspirierte und mitgestaltete. Normalerweise ist Licht, UV-Licht, schädlich für Kunstwerke, doch diese Situation wurde hier in einen Vorteil verkehrt.
Eine dunkelblaue von der Decke hängende Papierbahn mit Motiven einer Sonne und einzelner Planeten wurde während der sechswöchigen Ausstellungslaufzeit von der direkten Lichteinstrahlung gebleicht. Nur eine kleine Schablone deckte einen kreisförmigen Bereich ab, so dass das darunter liegende Papier seine ursprüngliche Färbung behielt. Die reale Sonne ließ die Sonne und Planeten sowie jegliche Kontraste über die Zeit optisch langsam verschwinden, während das unter der Schablone geschützte dunkelblaue Papier seine Farbe bewahrte und so einen dunklen ‚Mond erzeugte.

Mein Equinox-Konzept basiert auf der kosmologischen Tagundnachtgleiche, die jährlich zweimal (Frühjahr/Herbst) stattfindet – während der Ausstellung am 23. September 2018.
Der mit der Eröffnung begonnene Bleichvorgang vollzieht symbolisch das Verschwinden langer Sommertage, das Durchschreiten der Tagundnachtgleiche und schliesslich den Auftritt länger werdender Winternächte nach.
