Words are mine, written down by Editor-in-chief Stefanie Stadel.

I have just returned from an adventure hike to Zugspitze, Germany’s tallest mountain.
On top, I worked on a project about disappearing glaciers.
This inspiring project was made possible thanks to the BBK Bundesverband Berlin, who awarded me with the NEUSTART KULTUR grant for Innovative Art Projects.
The video project was kindly supported by Deutscher Künstlerbund e.V. and NEUSTART KULTUR.

DORMANCY is an artistic documentation of the breathtaking wildfires around Athens and the Greek island of Euboea during summer of 2021, showing destroyed ancient pine forests in ankle-deep layers of white, gray, and black ashes. The burned areas extend to the horizon and beyond, allowing only just a fractional view of the whole. In the midst of this ecological devastation we stumble upon fresh sprouts, green shoots, and therefore glimmers of hope for a future to come.
DORMANCY connotes the local Greek wildfires with current global fires in Alaska, Greenland, and Siberia on record-breaking scales which are directly related to climate change.
Whenever wildfires occur too violently, too frequently, in the wrong place or at an unusual time, this is a sign of the ecosystem’s imbalance due to human intervention.
In botany, dormancy refers to a delay in development under unfavorable conditions and includes seed or bud rest.

During my residency I focus my research on the largest and most violent wildfire on the island which raged in 2013 and changed the environment until today.
In the current issue of EVOLVE you can read my extensive interview about art, physics and nature: Die Poesie der Analyse – EVOLVE No. 26.
„In her work, Angelika J. Trojnarski combines thorough research on physical and biological phenomena with the poetic expression of art. She is moved by boundless curiosity and the desire to awaken recognition and love in people. We spoke to the artist about this scientific-artistic research process.“
The edition was published on the occasion of the exhibition Biophilia. 100% of all proceeds are donated to Greenpeace. The sale contributes to the reforestation of the Amazon rainforest, strengthens the voice of the indigenous tribes there, and supports Greenpeace‘s impact in that region.
