AWARD

Warm Breath
I have just returned from an adventure hike to Zugspitze, Germany’s tallest mountain. On top, I worked on a project about disappearing glaciers.
The accompanying, artistic-scientific website WarmBreath.org is now online. It aims to raise awareness for the rapid and irreversible glacier melt not only on the Zugspitze, but also globally.

This inspiring project was made possible thanks to the BBK Bundesverband Berlin, who awarded me with the NEUSTART KULTUR grant for Innovative Art Projects.

DORMANCY is an artistic documentation of the breathtaking wildfires around Athens and the Greek island of Euboea during summer of 2021, showing destroyed ancient pine forests in ankle-deep layers of white, gray, and black ashes. The burned areas extend to the horizon and beyond, allowing only just a fractional view of the whole. In the midst of this ecological devastation we stumble upon fresh sprouts, green shoots, and therefore glimmers of hope for a future to come.

DORMANCY connotes the local Greek wildfires with current global fires in Alaska, Greenland, and Siberia on record-breaking scales which are directly related to climate change.
Whenever wildfires occur too violently, too frequently, in the wrong place or at an unusual time, this is a sign of the ecosystem’s imbalance due to human intervention.

In botany, dormancy refers to a delay in development under unfavorable conditions and includes seed or bud rest.
