Angelika J. Trojnarski’s paintings contain a certain tension within themselves.
Being highly interested in natural sciences, Trojnarski is revealing their inherent inconsistency. Scientific knowledge believed to be true is all too frequently proven to be wrong and updated by new theories. While acknowledging the simultaneousness of facts and visions, her work represents the never-ending and accelerating cycle of growth and decay, progress and collapse, pursuit and failure.

The starting point for most of Trojnarski’s new work is her interest in discarded scientific beliefs and their subsequent reorganisation. Her artistic ideas evolve out of her research on scientific paradigms as well as paradigm shifts, appreciating their inherent inconsistency and conflicting statements as a source of inspiration. Recent examples are the ongoing research on the ability of migratory birds to navigate using the earth’s magnetic field, or the various theories about the big bang. What is most striking about her paintings is a remarkable ambiance of energy captured on the canvas. This effect comes into being through an abstract and rather vertical composition, where different colours and painting techniques clash – some of them impenetrable and dark, some more lively and light – like colliding air masses causing a thunderstorm. She also uses figurative elements as reference to the theories inspiring her work.

Trojnarski possesses a personal repertoire of motifs and themes that she integrates in an allegorical syntax. Hybrid creatures, entities and architectural constructs are staged in exterior and interior spaces, raising the question whether they are emerging or bursting. A critical tendency cannot be denied here, but she rather seems to seek answers to the question of what is animating us to strive, to grow and be creative in both art and science. Each crash means a release of energy and offers new opportunities for action –
a potential.
